I am able to lock just fine with my Touch squeezebox. I recently made a music server and I am have it unlock on me quite a bit. I changed the side car to mount onto the DAC in hopes that would take care of it. It did help but not completely. Any ideas on what could be causing this? All replies appreciated.

I would try increasing the DPLL bandwidth. A music server sounds like it could be a PC. Those often use cheap parts for their audio output, which may result in variations in the timing the DAC can't correct.

I spoke to soon. I am now having the same issuses on the Touch with high rez files. Not sure why. Could it be from taking the thing apart on to many times? Maybe the ribbon cable? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have put the DPLL at the highest setting and still get loss of locking. Could someone point me in the direction where I should be looking?

Try "BEST"
Also some shielding of the DAC board would help (inside a metal case)
Locks will greatly decrease after warm-up (30-50 minutes)

I have tried best it is not working very well anymore. Not sure what happend. I had no problems to start with. I have actually went back to Best because it does not seem to matter. I have also tried a different digital cable. No difference.

Hi mjock,

I have the same problem with my PC.
Adjusting the DPLL does not matter at all. If I start up the PC I always hear a crackling fire or a pick-up like sound.

The only way for me to deal with this is switch 1 to 4 times with the mute of my PC or switching the source of the 4:1 MUX.

Like Leon said, I think our soundboards have a little bit of a cheapy cheapy clocks used in it.

Building a USB module might also solve this problem. This is still on my list.

Thank you Jordo, yes I have a USB on order now. Just couldn't wait any longer. The strange thing though is that I never had any drop out before when using the Touch and now I do. What do you mean by "switching the source of the 4:1 MUX"?

Really appreciate both of your inputs. I really like the way the Buffalo sounds and miss being able to listen to high rez.

0. twist all your cables inside enclosure
1. make your cables as short as possible ... and mostly those with TTL level

2. improve your grounding scheme if previous suggestion did not help
3. if neither, post pictures of your assembly

By "switching the source of the 4:1 MUX" I mean that you can try to select another input source and than place it back to the position of the desired input.
For example you have the Touch on D1 and you hear a distortion or you have locking issues, you can try to switch to D2 and back to D1 with the rotary switch of the 4:1 Mux...

Thanks to all! It is back to working on the Touch. Did something similar to Jordo. I first switched it back and forth but no sucess. Then I took it out of position 2 and put it in position 1 switched back and forth and it is working. No idea why, wire were tight. But I am happily listening to music.

Glad that I could help :)

When I was experimenting with this I noticed that when I disconnected the Molex connector of the S/Pdif Torx input directly on the DAC board and reconnected it, that suddenly the crackling sound dissapeared directly.

This also works for muting the PC (soundcard) and put it back on again or switching the source input select back and forward.
This is not as direct as method #1 but after several attempts it alway's works!

As Leon said before this might be caused by the poor designed PC devices.
I'm thinking to make the step to the USB upgrade this winter. That might deal with the issue.
