Hallo,

I recently got a second-hand Buffalo24 V1.2 and would like to upgrade it with spare trident V1 regulators. I have a full set of them remaining from my buffalo3 (including AVCC module) and wonder how I can best use them on the buffalo24.

I was reading on diy, that the popular Vref-mod can be improved by using tridents instead, and apparently, also the clock power-supply can be fed separately to the buffalo 24 board.

Unfortunately, I did not find a description where and how to insert them, which parts to remove, etc...
Can someone give me a hint where to find thin information, or alternatively, give some guidance here?

What else can I mod at a buffalo24? Are there any established tweaks that I didn´t read about yet?

Thanks
Flo

Your project has been in my "do it later when it becomes winter" for a long time. I have done some notes though. Here they are.

For the Buf24 we have the schematics on-line, in the documents container. At least we can see what to do.

The Vref mod was introduced way before the ACVV shunt module was developed. Therefore the Vref mod description at DIYa will give you a clue why to do anything in the first place.

At the Buf24 the AVCC lines (L&R) is fed from 1/2 IC3 (OPAMP) each. See schematic. What I will do it to remove IC3 and use the pads #1 & #7 to inject the output from the AVCC shunt module. Don't bother with the passive components around IC3 - when the OPAMP is removed these have no effect.

Then you have to feed the AVCC shunt. Remember, DON'T go over 5V. Now you have removed the OPAMP, the input VA is no longer needed. Or, if you trim down the VA input to 5v, you can use IC3 pin #8 as input for your AVCC shunt.

As for the 1.2 (1.3)v trident, remove the REG2 from the board and use REG2 pad #2 to inject the output from the 1.3v trident. Here again, the trident will need to be fed 5v max.

As for the clock, the original design shares the supply to the clock with the VDD supply to the chip itself. You have to trace the pin 4 from the clock to a point where you can make a cut - and insert a 3.3v trident.

Lots of fun - and don't blame me if it ends up in smoke ;-)

WOW, avr, great post.
That is really helpful.

Actually it is also on my "to do list when it gets winter"...
I´ll let you know if I succeed.

Cheers

Hallo,

so far, I had a closer look on the Buffalo 24 board.
The AVCC supply is clear on the pins of IC3. Also the 1.2V trident on REG2 is clear. This can be done with a little patience and a steady hand.

I think it is difficult to trace a cut point for the clock, but I will look into this more deeply.
How it looks now, I think I will leave the clock supply as it is.
However, isn´t it possible to use another 3.3V trident in the pace of REG1?

And another question:
The manual for the buffalo24 only speaks of a three pin header for SCL and SDA, but my version has a 4 pin header with VDD being the fourth pin.
Is it maybe possible to feed the 3.3V VDD right here?

Thanks
Flo
