Maybe the I2C input of the ES9018 is damaged. But even in stock configuration(no firmware) it should lock on TTL SPDIF. So it may damaged in some other way.

Try and see if the dac will work with SPDIF before you give up.

The B-III needs the Tridents to work. It has no on-board regs at those spots.
