Is it possible to explain how the sympatico shunt regulated supply with the tl431 works? i.e. which resistors set the Vcc & 15v. I would like to be able to produce a similar design for +/-18v for example to power a symmetrical b1 buffer

It is possible, but I wouldn't try it until your certain you understand how to set the gain yourself. :)

Otherwise you much better off using something like a LCBPS or Placid HD-BP

Fair point it may be a bit advanced for me.
Is it possible to point me to a document or datasheet that explains maybe a bit more than the basic stuff.
For example I can see similarities with page 29 figure 19 of this:

But not sure why you use 2 tl431's per polarity ...

I am glad you are investigating. I respect that very much! :)

A couple of things:

1) No it not really like figure 19 as it is a shunt regulator, not series.
2) there are two per rail because one is used as a voltage reference for a constant current source, and the other is used as an error amp.

If you read up on the values of the voltage reference and the effect of negative feedback you will find your answer. :)

Also looking at the original values and working backward from the known voltage will help you.

I am a manufacturing engineer so i understand water flow, faucets etc. but this is a bit more challenging for me.

I can see that r18 & r16 form a voltage divider and 2,5Vx(1+10/2) is 15v, so REF1 must be providing the regulated 15v output?

Therefore REF4 must be part of the CCS? What is the effect of wiring the reference pin of REF4 with the cathode? Is that to supply a constant current to R20?

I have not quite worked out the transistors and negative feedback yet...
