Hi,

I want to power the sidecar and spdif board with a separate power supply and still use the ribbon cable for the connection to the B3. I left out the power lines from it so the power could not come from the dac. I was just about to attach the ribbon cable to the connector when I started to wonder what to do about the ground lines.

So should I leave them in? Does this mean the power supplies share gnd? I'm not a technician in the field of electronics, so sorry for dumb questions.

Hi Corprius,

It is always a good idea to twist the power en neutral/gnd lines together to minimize the EMI field.
All grounds will connect so it's better to make as less as possible different gnd connections.

Not intending to offend you, but your answer has not reassured me.

Let me explain myself a bit more detailed.

I want the placid to power just the dac. I want to power sidecar and spdif board with a separate psb. This is not a placid. Therefor I removed the 2 power lines from the ribbon cable that sits between dac and sidecar. The ribbon cable between the sidecar and spdif board does still have the 2 power lines. This way the spdif board is powered via the sidecar.

When looking at the pin lay-out of the digital input connector there are 8 ground connectors. These are probably all signal grounds. Because I don't see any power grounds at the digital input connector I assumed that these 8 ground connectors also carry the power ground. If this is right, then both power grounds of the placid powering the dac and the other psb powering the sidecar-spdif board will mix.

Now to simplify my questing: Can I power it all like I described it?

Well you would probably want to power the sidecar and the SPDIF4 from the same supply, but it need not be the same supply as is powering the DAC. You will need to be sure the supply line from the DAC is truly disconnected. Check with a DMM to be certain. GND should definitely still be connected.

Sidecar and spdif module are still connected via the ribbon cable. I did not modify this cable so the spdif module gets powered via sidecar.
I removed the two most outer or right lines from the ribbon cable between dac and sidecar. These two cables are normally connected to pin 19 and 20 of the input connector. I'll check with my DDM to be sure there no power comes from the dac before powering sidecar and spdif module with the other power supply. Better safe then sorry.

Well, like I said before better safe then sorry, but you where right.

I'm listening at the dac atm. The sidecar and spdif board are being powered by a separate power supply.
