I’m having a lot of fun assembling my Buffalo III. I’m approaching the finish line but have a minor issue with the AVCC module. One of the LEDs on the AVCC module does not light. I brought up the Placid HD and Placid HD Bipolar power supplies with no problem. I have enclose a photo of the AVCC module with 1.) voltages I have measured across the two LEDs, 2.) in and out voltages at the two headers, measured using the gnd terminal of the header. Can you make any suggestions?

Is that 4.9V output on the right side? If so then I would suspect the AVCC module has been damaged.

Thank you for you cooperation and prompt attention with the replacement AVCC module. The replacement AVCC module was installed. The same problem exists with the replacement AVCC module. D1 & D2 on the replacement board lit for one minute. D1 then went out - same D1 failure as the first board. The same voltage readings (compared to the first board) now exists with the replacement board see photo with above post. Can you please help me with this problem? I have checked very carefully the header solders and checked for any blob of solder on the board. I have been very careful to clean any solder resin deposits with a tooth brush and alcohol.

Can you post some pictures of the Buffalo board w/o the AVCC in place (top and bottom)?

Find below photos of Buffalo III board w/o AVCC Module. Let me know if you require additional photos from additional angles:

I am very frustrated. I have $700 of DAC sitting here that is a brick - this Buffalo III will not work with this dead AVCC module LED. To recap - Have tried two AVCC modules and they both have had LED, D1 go out. One AVCC module’s D1 never lit and the second AVCC module’s D1 went out after one minute of operation. I have posted high resolution photos of the Buffalo III board per Russ’s request (5 days ago) on this support forum. No response – no communication. I am unable to use the Buffalo III and unable to get any support from TP. How can I solve my problem and use the Buffalo III?

Please try to measure voltages when only one part of AVCC is connected.

Keep the "pears" pictures aligned, but move the AVCC so only the one side is connected. So there are two configurations - left only, and right only.
Try the first attempts only for short time (to check if LEDs works). It might be possible, than the currently working side will be blown up after couple of seconds.

There might be various scenarios:
- both LED will be lit on both sides if connected separately (this is expected behaviour on working DAC)
- both LED will be lit one one side, but not working on the other side
- only one LED will be lit on both sides

We will try to figure out more after you post the results.

Sorry, lost track of this...

This is a strange problem. What are you using for a power supply for the DAC?

The circles solder joint looks funky. Can you confirm that it is not making contact with the copper pour on the bottom of the board?

I understand your point about the solder at the header joint on the Buffalo board. The solder whisker you observed is high on the header – away from the board and is not a short to the copper pour. Have since re-heated this joint and the solder is now smooth and bright (see enclosed photo). I question your point – this red circled joint is the terminal marked GND (on the AVCC Module). Would this specific header contact with the pour at this point on the board cause the AVCC Module to burn out D1? No, it would not – the 5V reading indicates the problem is on the opposite side of the AVCC Module. I conclude one half of the ES9018 was defective at delivery and that has burned out two new AVCC Modules. I have enclosed photos of the top half and bottom half of the Buffalo board for inspection of all solder joints on Buffalo board.

I am using a Placid set to 5.25V (as you can see in the first photo of this thread) and the 9+9 Avel transformer – both purchased from TP. The Placid is also powering a TP TOSLINK Module. The current is set to 490mA. When this voltage and current is dialed in, the shunt voltage is 100mA.
