I have completed the S/PDIF-4/Sidecar/Buffalo III, Legato 3.1 build, and I am having trouble with the S/PDIF board.
Inputs one and two are set up for RCA and BNC respectively.
Inputs 3 and 4 are each set up to receive a TTL signal from the included Toslink receiver board. I set up input 4 like this for testing purposes, once I saw input 3 wasn't working.

Here's what happens:
- Input 1 by itself with nothing connected to the other inputs works fine (and the sound is awesome!!!)
- Input 4 by itself with nothing connected to the other inputs works fine, but while music is playing and I switch to input 3 or 2, the BIII relocks and the same music coming in on input 4 plays with switch setting 2 or 3. (Note: the LED voltage switch signal to B on the Sidecar has disconnected.]
- Input 2 doesn't work at all, cannot lock
- Input 3 doesn't work at all, cannot lock
- When either input 1 or input 4 are used with other connections made to any of the three inputs, the music doesn't play, or there is popping, and intermittent loss of lock-on.

Here are some resistance readings that look strange to me: ref to output ground on the S/PDIF board, moving across the S/PDIF board line of resistors:

R13 - 2.73K
R5 - 2.73K
R9- 2.73K
---
R14 - 7.4K
R6 - 2.73K
R10 - 2.73K
---
R11 - 2.73K
R7 - 2.73K
R15 - 7.4K
---
R12 - 2.7K
R8 - 2.7K
R16 - 2.7K

It's the two 7.4K readings at the top of R14 and R15 that look strange to me.

I have checked voltages all the way through the BIII to the Sidecar to the S/PDIF board. All OK. The Placid HD is providing 5.25v and CSS current measures at 535mA.

I have checked the continuity of the ribbon cable from the BIII to the Sidecar and have checked the hard-wired joining of the Sidecar and the S/PDIF board.

I would be grateful for advice on how to proceed with troubleshooting this problem.

You would need to measure the opposite pad on R14 and R15 to get the equivalent circuit to GND.

Make sure you are not triggering the side car by applying current to "B" while trying to play SPIDF.

Also you need to recheck your shunt current while music is playing.

Also you might try each input configured for consumer with the same source moving from input 1 to 4 and check each that way.

Any chance we can get a picture of the soldered header between the Sidecar and S/PDIF-4 boards?

Thank you for the tips. Problem solved!

This was caused by a double mistake I made with the Tridents:
- I mistakenly assumed that the Tridents needed R4's -- not seeing any regular sized resistors in place, seeing empty holes, and missing the fact that there were already SMD's in place. I thought that I had misplaced the resistor pack for this.
- Then, instead of using the R4 values in the guide, I used the R8 values in the guide!

It is a wonder that anything worked at all, and I am grateful there is no damage.

The S/PDID-4 with Sidecar now works perfectly.
