I have a OPUS / IVY III and Ventus headphone amp. Can I connect the OPUS directly to Ventus? The case I am going to use is too tight to fit IVY so was thinking of leaving it out.
Please let me know.
Thanks!

Hello Russ,
I completed the build of Ventus amp last night and I am seeing a problem with it. When I power on the music starts playing with static then the static goes away in couple seconds and the music sounds good for few seconds, then the static starts and music fades away and the amp becomes silent.
What could be the reason? Everytime I power on this repeats. I don't see any part on the amp hot or even warm.
Thanks for your help. Subbu

I will need a lot more detail. How did you configure the Opus/Ventus? Any chance you can attach some pics?

Hello Russ, my configuration below: 1. Opus in hardware mode (Version 2.0 board with WM8740 DAC). Verified the Opus working in hardware mode (using IVY III). 2. Ventus balanced in from Opus output directly connected. I double checked the polarity. Adjusted the Ventus offset to 0 by shorting the IN + / - and measuring the output. Right now there is no volume control as I am planning to run Opus in Software mode with volumite. I don't know if you remember from the old thread where I was trying to get the Volumite working. I did order a ATTiny firmware chip again from you (guessing I might have damaged the first one) and followed the instructions you posted. Still it doesn't work. I left all the switches on Opus open and connected the volumite. Have you tested volumite with Opus ver 2.0 with WM8740? I really want to get this running as this has been dragging for over an year. I start then something doesn't work, then I move on :-) and revisit after some time. Thanks for your help. Subbu Edited by user Sunday, February 26, 2012 7:10:25 PM(UTC)

Pictures would be great. How are you power things? What input impedance to do you have the Ventus set up for?

Russ, I will post the pictures when I get home today. I am powering both Ventus from one LCBPS set to +/-15V. The transformer is a toroid with dual 15V and 1A secondary current. For input impedance, I used the resistors which came with the kit. I assume its 2K. The output of Opus directly goes to the Ventus inputs. I do have the capacitors at Opus output (C5-C8, 22uF ELNA).
Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks!

Does the output offset change as you apply power with the DAC running?
Is the DAC working correctly with no output stage?

The DAC works correctly when I connect it to IVY III. I haven't checked the output offset with DAC running. I can check it when I get home. Should it be changing or no?
Thanks!

I checked the output offset when the DAC is running and I see about 2.5 milli volts where I had set to 0v.
Thanks!

Are the LEDs on the Ventus lighting correctly?
Try setting up the Ventus for SE input and drive it from another source. Get the Ventus working first.
Setting up the ventus for SE input is as simple as connecting -In to GND. Then just take the SE signal to +IN and GND.
lets see how that works.

Russ,
Yes all the LEDs on Ventus are lighting correctly. So today I connected the balanced output from IVY to OPUS and the Ventus works fine. The issue happens only when I connect Ventus directly to OPUS outputs. Is there any changes I can make on Ventus to get it work directly with OPUS.
Also I am still not able to get the OPUS WM8740 - Volumite combo working. I get only static noise. I was able to get the OPUS work in software mode using Arduino but it doesn't work consistently. I have sent you an email with the code and would appreciate if you could take a look at it.
Thanks!

Have you tried DC coupling the opus to the ventus?
Your best bet with doing your own firmware is to study the data sheet until you get it.

Thanks Russ. Sure, I will study the datasheet until I get it, but what do I do with the two firmware chips I bought for Volumite - WM8740 Stereo. First one you said I might have damaged it with improper switch settings on Opus board. So I ordered the second one and I took care to make sure all the switches are open on Opus and connected the Volumite. It still doesn't work. What should I do?

Wm8740 is SPI, so you just need to be sure that the volumite is connected for SPI.
