Hi,
I am in the process of building a Buff3 with IVY.
To keep things simple i intend for a first trial to have only a Toslink input.
I have read the manuals and threads and i am still unsure of the following, and would be grateful for info.
1. The toslink is assembled except for L1. I see the circuit board has a circle around one of the L1 pcb holes. L1 can be fitted any way round surely?
On Toslink board
2. VCC is +5.25v from placid HD.
G is ground from placid HD.
Out is output to D1
Ground is ground on Buff3.

Hi Brian,
This is helpful to me, but what about jumper and switch settings in this case?
I'd like to start with Toslink and experiment with I2S connection, ideally without having to resolder any of those fiddly SMD jumpers (for me link jumpers would be a much better option).
It is clear to me that for I2S I need to install the JPCM1 - 3 jumpers and set the spdif auto-detect to bypass, but I'm concerned that the jumpers may interfere with the input pairing when using the single TTL s/pdif input from the Toslink module.
I have become confused, because s/pdif is stereo (isn't it?), the DAC has 8 channels and yet the Integration Guide lists 8 (stereo?) s/pdif inputs - how can there be 8 stereo inputs?
Also in the section entitled TTL level S/PDIF it says:
If you want to use all inputs, remove the following jumpers if they are present:
JPCM1 (JPCM1, 3)
JPCM2 (JPCM2, 1)
JPCM3 (JPCM3, 2)
JDSD1 (JDSD1, 5)
JDSD2 (JDSD2, 4)
Does that mean it does need the jumpers when you only want one input? Part of me thinks that it probably doesn't and that switch settings can take care of this, but it isn't clear to me in the documentation.

It's fairly simple: you can use input 1 OR input 2 OR input 3, etc. For your configuration, I'd suggest using a Sidecar module. It's likely one of the easiest ways of combining I2S and S/PDIF. As for the jumpers: look on page 6 to read what they actually do. I think you'll then understand why you need to remove them to be able to use all 8 inputs.

Thanks for the quick response Leon,
The Sidecar module makes plenty of sense, aside from the fact that I want to get something running soon. I appreciate what you're saying about the jumpers, but I only want to use 1 input.
I have already soldered the jumpers JPCM1-3 in place - I was intending to use I2S input from the start, but I have changed my mind.
I want to start off using Toslink and switch to I2S (either with, or without a Teleporter Module) later.
My main question is:
Do I need to remove JPCM1-3 if I want to connect the output of the Toslink Module to D1 - I only want to use 1 input?

If you don't hook up anything else I can't see why you would need to remove the jumpers. D1 is separate from the rest, you just joined D2-D5. If you don't put a signal on any of those you should be fine.
