I have been trying to get BUFIII working with 4 input SPDIF card. I could never get a lock signal. I then used only TOSLINK board and hooked output directly to D1 input. I know I have a good optical output (tested with another DAC). I am confused over integration manual, as it states that if you want to use ALL inputs remove jumpers if present (page 19), but I can't find what jumpers are necessary if one input is used. Is there anything else that I should look at? I have rechecked connections, wiring, etc, but haven't found anything obvious. I don't have a scope, so I can only check voltages. It does seem that I have a voltage out of the TOSLINK board.

How long are the ribbon cables on 4/SPDIF? I had issues using longer. Now I have <5 cm and problems are gone.
Don't forget to choose correct input using switches on Buffalo.
Consider posting photo of your setup.

OK, just for clarity, here is what is setup...
1. Only Placid PSU, Buffalo III and TOSLINK board are active and connected. 2. Voltage is set 5.25VDC, 480mA, no sag when powered. Buffalo III and TOSLINK board connected. 3. Jumpers on Buffalo III are J1 through J12 are in place (zero Ohms). 4. No jumpers installed on JPCM1-3, JDSD1 & JDSD2. 5. SW1 and SW2 all positions are set to OFF. 6. Input from TOSLINK to Buffalo III is on DIN connector D1 input, pins 3 and 4(signal & ground). 7. All LED's light up on all 3 Trident Regulators (6 LED's). 8. Only the Mute LED is lit on the Buffalo III. 9. Optical link has been tested with another DAC, lock achieved.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

I'm not sure about powering B3 and TOSLINK without 4MUX from same power supply, due to ground loop in that configuration. You can try to power TOSLINK from 3V battery if it helps. Also try other input than D1. How long is the cable from TOSLINK to B3? Edited by user Monday, January 30, 2012 5:17:07 AM(UTC)

You did not mention the leds of the AVCC regulator. Is it installed on the BIII?
BIII and toslink together should not cause a problem. If a ground loop is a concern, remove the output gnd from the toslink module, leaving just the signal output.

Time to start showing some pictures. :) Powering the toslink module from the same PS won't cause a problem. It is done regularly. I suspect there is something more basic at work here. Post pictures of the TORX module etc.

I should have mentioned the AVCC regulator is showing 2 LED's active as well.

This is the Toslink with the correct voltage regulator? You were amoung the few people who initially received the wrong vreg in the Toslink kit.

Yes, I changed the regulator. I was able to check output this morning from the TOSLINK board, and it is a solid TTL signal going to the DAC. So now the question is what to check on the DAC that I may have done wrong. Also, though I have done a search, I cannot locate the Buffalo III schematic. OK, stupid mistake (not surprisingly). I switched two of the Trident regulators. Now all is good. Now back to playing around with the 4 mux SPDIF board. Thanks for all suggestions. BTW, it was on the pictures I submitted that got me to check (AGAIN) for the fourth time.
