I have the Placid with output of 5.24V, CCS at 0.490v (between TP_Vin & TP_CCS) and shunt (between TP_Out & TP_Shunt) at 0.489v when not connected to the BIII but once connected to the BIII, it drops to 1.19V and CCS remains at 0.488v. but the shunt is unstable between 5.1 to 6.5mV.
I have also checked the transistors, QN5,QN6 & QN7 are BC550B while QP3, QP4, QP7 & QP8 are BC560B and their positions are correct. I also noticed that QN1's heat sink gets hotter (much hotter and can't put finger longer than 5 seconds) than QN2's heat sink while stayed connected to the BIII.
What seems to be the problem?

Okay, I got it. I have the ribbon connector wrongly connected to the S/Pidf board and that is drwing the power away, I think. Thanks. Now my problem is that I can't get the AES/EBU to play. I connect to my cd output using rca and it plays fine. When connect to the AES/EBU, nothing comes out of the speakers, though the LED stayed on 'Lock' position and lights up. I have soldered the resistor that was pack along with the kit indicating that it was for the AES/EBU use (R1-R4). Please help. Thanks.

What is the input signal level? Which board version are you using and what resistor(s) are you using (measured)?

I do not know the input signal level. I tried measuring the 'hot' and 'cold' of the AES/EBU connector (from the cd)and got over 200mV. How do I actually measure it?
For the AES/EBU I used the 110 ohm 1/4W resistor. And no, the 'lock' signal wasn't on. And I noticed after playing for about 2 hours, the heat sinks of the Placids HD are really hot. I measure the Placid HD output for the BIII and it registered a 5.12V and CCS current about 0.516V. As for the IVYIII, the placids HD-BP output measured at 14.95V and CCS at 0.715V. Is this too high?

If the Placids are shunting 516mA they are bound to get VERY HOT and may even get damaged. Please read the Placid HD manual before proceeding: you should adjust the CSS current to a level that leads to 50-60mA of shunt current, which means 50-60mV over TP-out to TP-shunt. Adjust both power supplies BEFORE you proceed.

If I tune the Placid (for BIII) to 50mV over TP_Vin & TP CCS, the BIII refuse to light up. Below is my measurement :
Placid for BIII - Input : 10.5V Output : 5.19v TP_Vin & TP_CCS : 0.445V TP_Out & TP_Shunt : 8.2mV
Placid for IVY 3 : Input : 17.72V Output : 14.65v TP_Vin & TP_CCS : 132mV TP_Out & TP_Shunt : 49.2mV
I don't understand why am I getting 8.2mV at the shunt of the placid for BIII. Should I lower the CCS? The heat sinks of the placids are really Hot. Right now it is playing. Thanks.

My measurement across R8 for Placid HD for BIII : 8.84v. TP-Vref & TP_Gnd : 03.79V. The heat sinks get really hot only while it is playng music. When not playing music, it stays at a comfortable warm level. I still can't get the AES/EBU input to play. Edited by user Wednesday, January 18, 2012 4:12:34 AM(UTC)

I have made adjustment to my Placid for the BIII. Now it measured:
Input from transformer : 10.9V Output to BIII : 5.24V TP_Vin & TP_CCS : 0.487V TP_Out & TP_Shunt : 046.1mV TP_Vref & TP_Gnd2 : 03.78V
Is the above measurement okay for the BIII? I still can't get the AES/EBU to sing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your last measurements are more in line with what one would expect from a BIII setup. Do you have measurements of the temperature of your heatsinks? Pictures might help for the AES/EBU problem.

Hi, Tanks for reply. No, I do not have the measurement of the heat sink, but I think in the region above 50 degree c. I'll invest in a measurement device tomorrow. My fingers can't touch it for for than 5 second and this is before I connect to the BIII. In the process of removing wires, etc. around, now i can't get signal from my cd player as well. The 'Lock' LED keeps flashing. What do you think is the problem?

Below 80 is ok. Below 50 would take a miracle. These are shunt regulators: you dispose of the remainder of CSS by shunting it.

Hi Leon, Thanks for reply. I got it measured. They are all below 80d C. The hottest is the QN1 (Placid for the BIII) which registered a range between 59-64 degree C. The QN2 is about 55 degree C. I have attached some photos of the Mux. On the far left is configured for AES/EBU. The second from the left is also for another AES/EBU. The third is for S/Pdif and the last if for TTL. For the AES/EBU wires, the blue is for 'cold', green for 'Gnd' and orange/brown for 'Hot'. On the connector, the no. 1 pin is for 'Gnd' (green), No.2 pin for 'Hot' (orange/brown) and the No. 3 pin for 'cold' (blue). These are wires from a Cat 6 cable. I did not use the sidecar as I do not know in which direction should the relay (S1-3) be solder on. Actually my cd player is connected to a device which has a S/Pdif and AES/EBU output. The S/Pdif from this device works but not the AES/EBU. I have tried it with my other DAC and there's no problem with the AES/EBU output from this device. It is a Monarchy Audio DIP device, which is used to reduce jitter. I am also connecting my AC Ryan media server to the BIII and is connected to the TTL input.

It sounds like you are using the standard lay-out for XLR, but does your other device also use that lay-out? Monarchy warns that not all of their devices use the standard XLR lay-out, so that might be your problem.

Make sure your relays are 5V. The relay pin one is marked - there is a corresponding mark on the PCB.

Hi Russ, Thank you very much. Everything is working fine with the BIII now. The problem was with my XLR cable. Sorry. I do not see any mark on the sidecar pcb. Is the relay indicated by the two dots at the lower left? Thanks again.
