As the chip (apparently) is so sensitive to a quality of the power supply, what would be the best (sound quality wise) approach to feed it - is it reasonable to, let's say, use a separate PS going to each trident, or, at least, to the clock, or left/right AVCC?

Batteries. But you can try to add 47uF low-ESR capacitors on the Trident/AVCC output, as I did. They helped me to get rid of oscillations I've measured on my Tridents/AVCC.

Thanks Miero. What voltage are those caps? Did you get any improvement sound wise adding them or was it only related to the signal lock? Btw, the PS you use for BIII is unregulated?
