Bernard, you are not alone :) The end of the holidays does not mean start of sales, I guess. If you read more info through this forum, you will notice that the guys have sale sessions once in 2 weeks time. So, look for the next sales announce, hope it will be in less than 2 weeks time :)

Buffalos are being manufactured as we speak. They should be on sale soon.

Nice to hear from you! I hope you enjoyed your recent fall holidays! The recent DIY project i built was a Geddon PSU for my Linn Sondek turntable LP12 letting me resell the Lingo! Now I want to upgrade the Linn Numerik Dac with your amazing Buffalo III Dac. Kind regards Bernard

Hi, let me know please if any special skills other than being able to make nice soldering are required to successfully build a DIY Dac? When i go into local HIFI shops, sellers usually said that to get an outstanding top quality Dac, it doesn't only depend on the chip used but also on the quality of others components... So purchasing an ESS Sabre 32 chip with a top PSU isn't enough, to be sure to go thru the roof... Since i could build a Geddon PSU for my LP12, may I consider i will be able to build my DAC and the result may compete with products you may purchase in HIFI shop at about $1200, such as the Wyred4sound Dac-1 or the M2tech Young Dac? regards Bernard

If you can solder well, you can build a fantastic dac with the Buffalo.

Thank you Brian for your kind answer! I will check this next week end if it's possible to order... ;-) The main toroïdal transformer giving 15+15 as secundary output is probably heavy so it would be wise to find one here in Paris, because the freight fee maybe huge! with the Buffalo III card is it mandatory to order a Placid power supply? kind regards Bernard

Hi Brian, I was wrong about the power Transformer: it's the 9+9 required instead of 15+15! The toroïdal transfo weight is 300 grams, not to heavy... Do i also need an accessory card such as 4-channel S/PDIF Input? I will need a coaxial BNC plug + a USB port + a pair of Cinch for the analog outputs, that's all i guess kind regards Bernard

I recently purchased the BIII dac along with Legato I/V stage during the September sale. I am so glad that I took the plunge. The Dac was finished in 2-3 weeks time, it's not too hard. Basic soldering skill is all needed. It is very helpful to read through the integration guide and the forum postings several times to understand what to do. The sound quality of the DAC is way beyond my expectations. I originally have an Emotiva XDA-1 DAC and the BIII blew it out of the water so badly, it's not funny. I highly encourage anyone has a mean to put this together try this DAC. I couldn't be happier of how it turned out. Edited by user Wednesday, October 26, 2011 10:07:48 AM(UTC)

Quote:the result may compete with products you may purchase in HIFI shop at about $1200, such as the Wyred4sound Dac-1 or the M2tech Young Dac? That is a very gross understatement. If you build it right with a single board, it should be able to compete with products in the 2K+ class, and quite easily. Quote:The main toroïdal transformer giving 15+15 as secundary output is probably heavy so it would be wise to find one here in Paris, because the freight fee maybe huge! That might be a good idea. I've purchased the transformers on this side of the pond also, as freight charges do go up with the weight. You need 2x15V for the analog stage, and 9V for the digital stage. I've used R-Cores from Selectronic for my dual mono BII DAC: 3x TRANSFO "R" 30VA 2X9V - réf. 10.2051 2x TRANSFO "R" 30VA 2X15V - réf. 10.2057 That's one 9V for left DAC, one 9V for right DAC, and one spare (for the AC2). Plus one 15V for left IVY3 and one for right IVY3. I'd suggest reading the integration guide for what you need, esp. pages 34 and up. S/PDIF input board is required for BNC, I'd recommend Sidecar for USB (I2S).

Quote:What about the Placid psu? You will find a quite extensive description of what you need in the integration guide. The Placid HD is a good choice to power the BIII, as is the LCDPS. The Placid BP HD is a good choice for the IVY3/Legato.

Quote:Let me know what should you exactly order to build my STEREO DAC, to be used with a CD Drive and to play the FLAC files stored on my MacBookPro Laptop. Again, everything you need is already described in the guide, on page 34: 1x BIII 1x IVY3 1x Placid HD 1x Placid HD BP 1x 9V transformer 1x 15V transformer For your inputs you require at least: 1x 4-channel SPDIF input module 1x Toslink module (assuming you want to use the optical output of the MacBook) If you want to use USB as an input, you'd require Sidecar and the new USB receiver module (not available - yet). Small parts suggestions can be found in the extended bill of materials (page 37).

During the last sale the Buffalo 3 boards were "sold out" during 15 minutes, but then they were available again even on the next day. I assume many people put the items into shopping carts and then didn't buy them.
