Hallo forum

I will start to say, Sorry for my English, I am from Denmark.

I am a newbie , but want to try building a buffalo DAC. I have a logitech squeezebox touch, that I would like to connect to the buffalo DAC.

Could anybody please make me a list, what things I need to order, to get a well working DAC ?

Input : coax / spdif
Output : analog Rca

Thanks
Brian

Look here: http://www.twistedpearau...gration_Guide_V1.0.5.pdf
in the appendix: Bill of materials for Stereo mode DAC you'll find a fairly complete list of what you'll need, and the rest of the document describes what you need to do to get it working.

For starters, the ES9018 DAC chip itself is ~$50, as opposed to $10 for the WM8741; the Crystek XO is ~$20; the circuit board is four-layer. It's just a lot more in parts and a lot more work to make them.

The ESS chip is much more expensive than the Wolfson. Also there is a top of the line custom clock module on the BII. This combined with a multilayer PCB is bound to lead to a higher price.
But rest assured: when compared to products delivering (almost) equal performance, the BII is EXTREMELY cheap.

that's completely subjective.

Technically the Buffalo is superior.

I am trying to complete a Buffalo II project and got "caught" in the switchover. Here are my questions that I posed to Brian, but haven't received a response back yet. Here is what I asked Brian:

"This is my first electronics project in 35 years, so please bare with me. I am a software guy, a newbie with building hardware! I want to build a nice DAC with the Buffalo II. So far, I have the Buffalo II, Placid kit and Transformer.

From reading the integration pages, I need an IV circuit of some sort, so if a new one is coming out that works with the Buffalo module, I am fine. I will want to have toslink, multiple inputs, usb and I should be set. I am new to the forums, but I sometimes get lost in the threads, but I am learning gradually. I will look for a thread on the Legato 3. If you have any suggestions for the rest of the kit I should need, I am all ears, of course"

I am particularly interested in which IV circuit sounds the best to everyones ears. I am sensitive to hardening of transients, tend to lean toward tube sound in general, but like to be able to sense "air" between instruments in the sound field. Wouldn't be opposed to the laddered gain setup either, if that helps with isolation of left and right channels.

Any help would be appreciated in getting all my DAC components remaining on order.

regards,

jim

Well, currently Brian is a bit busy to say the least... :)

If you've read the integration guide, you know what you need:
- IVY3 or Legato 3.1
- Placid HD BP
- 15V transformer
- Mux (new one in the works)
- Toslink module
- USB receiver (new one in the works but not soon)

Hi Guys,

Sorry to slot in.

I am a new guy here too and excuse me for my weak english. I have been reading some post and thread on Twisted Pear Audio and kind of thinking for a go. Somehow plenty of combination and I get confuse. Someone here please enlighten me more before i decide to start buying. Any difference of B II, B III and B 32??

I will be using Ipod for source and old Naim gear with stereo channel. I'd tried to diy a valve pre, and rebuilt my Dynaco ST70 with plenty of assistance and guide. Hope this give me enough guts to try a dac, all by myself now. What is want is simple, cost saving to start and upgrade in near future.

Is the B II still available?
- I am thinking of B II because looks more simple then the complicated B III. Correct me if I am wrong please.

Is it fine of I only buy either of above without any of it's analog stage?
- I plan for valve output after the dac complete building and save to spend on IVY. Would it distroy my amp? Or should I consider COD with passive output?

Many thanks for sharing!!

Juniper

The only Buffalo available right now is the Buffalo III. It is a little more complicated than BII, but if you read the guide Leon put together and ask for help when you need it, you will get along just fine.

Cheers!
Russ

I'd go for a BIII and IVY3 combo. In some ways the BIII is actually simpler to build than the BII. The IVY3 is without a doubt the easier choice between the Legato 3.1 and the IVY3. See: http://www.twistedpearau...gration_Guide_V1.0.1.pdf for a guide on how to build the DAC.

Without a proper I/V stage the 9018 will not perform at it's best.

Thanks Russ and LeonvB. I'd roughly read thru bogh B II and B III integration Guide and clear most of my doubt. What is the price for the B II or it start selling Russ?

Hi Juniper,

Just go on the main TP page and click on Buffalo III (Buffalo II is not sold anymore). On top you will see a countdown in red. This is when the sale takes place. You will need to be on time and ready to press the buy button because they literally sell in a few minutes.

The price will also be indicated on the BIII page

Enjoy!
