Can you damage the MUX by underpowering it with too little current?

I have a MUX and Buff II that I was originally just inputing coax(S/PDIF) input to input one on the MUX and sending out via the I2S outputs to the Buffalo II. The lock light came on on the MUX and Buffalo II, and it was working great.
I then started getting ambitious and decided to add a relay to the DAC and input an I2S signal from an RJ45 jack (for DSD) from a SACD player to the relay, and then output the I2S signal from the MUX (using the same S/PDIF Coax input) to the relay board and then outputting the I2S signal to the Buffalo II. I was using a SPDT switch to switch between the 2 I2S signals (switch the relays). I get a lock with the Buff II from the RJ45 I2S signal, but I do not get one from the MUX (I2S) output to the Buffalo II. And the the MUX LED lock light does not light up, but I have seen it flash periodically. I still measure 5V input at the V+ and ground input at the MUX. But, no lock light. I was using one side of the LCDPS to power both the MUX (as I was before the relay being installed) and the relay board. The relay board uses 5V and draws 500ma. I have a few questions.
1) Is it possible to draw too much power and current by installing the relay board and powering it, leading to messing up components on the MUX? 2) I cannot remember, but should the lock LED on the MUX still ight is there is a signal coming in, but no signal going out of the MUX? 3)What is the best way of troubleshooting this problem?
Thanks for everyones' help.
Greg

Does your relay board have diodes across the relay coils?

Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply and the answer is no, it does not have diodes across the relay coils. Here is a picture of the relay board if that helps. Also, the total amperage draw is less than 500mA if that makes a difference at all. Edited by user Thursday, June 30, 2011 1:33:03 AM(UTC)

Read up on "flyback diode" on Wikipedia. You mux may have been damaged by a flyback voltage spike caused by the relay coils.

Thanks for the heads up on flyback diodes Brian. What would be the best way to check for damage to the MUX. What testing points should I try and what value(s) should I get as a result? Thanks again for the help, even though I am hoping you are incorrect. Greg P.S. When I hooked the power for the relay to the placid along with the Buffalo II, there was no damage to the Buffalo II though. It is working fine still. Any thoughts?? Is the Buffalo II just less suceptible to the spikes? Edited by user Thursday, June 30, 2011 5:52:12 AM(UTC)

It's really hard to predict what may have been damaged by a voltage spike. I guess I'd start by checking that the vregs on the MUX are still outputting the correct voltages. Revert to your original setup and see how it works (no relay board). Also, see if both I2S and S/PDIF outputs are having issues.

Hi Brian. The MUX board is definately not damaged as I got it to lock finally. Interestingly enough though is that I cannot get the Buffalo II to lock even with the MUX lock light on? Any thoughts on why this may be? I still get a lock light on the Buffalo II when the RJ45 jack (DSD) line is is sent through to the Buffalo II. I have a feeling that if I sent the signal directly from the MUX to the Buffalo II board (Via the I2S output lines) it would get a lock on the Buffalo II, but that would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to do. Thanks again Brian and/or Russ. Greg Edited by user Friday, July 1, 2011 12:44:28 AM(UTC)

You could try adding some 50R resistors from the I2S lines to GND on the inputs of the relay board (termination).
