Hi,

Buffalo II is a great dac and I enjoyed to listen the music.
But yesterday I tried to mod regulator, My buffalo is not locked I2S signal.

I checked the voltage and found VDD is 0.8V, and I found the 1.2V reg and dac chip is very very HOT!!
Other voltage is nomal I think.

I think the chip is broken, if so, can I repair my dac?

You can check US distributors, maybe they can help you.

Be patient
as soon as the Buff 3 starts shipping there will be plenty of used Buff 2's for sale

ManosP,
Thanks for your suggestion.

pelliott123,
Nice idea!

I sold my first couple of TP boards (through DIYAUDIO) when I was an early adopter of the newest wigits that came out.
I will probably stop at my present BII and Lagato3 set up unless and better audio board comes out. I do not think I will go to the BuffIII because I am not that kind of tweaker. The only thing I keep are the older PS boards as they come in very handy for other projects. I still have a Buff32s that I will keep for a SqueezeBox Duet set up for my second system.
There are plenty of guys out there that want to experience the TP magic but do not want to build a kit.

For stereo or dual-mono I don't think the BIII is any better than the BII and I will personally not switch.
It has some advantages, like multiple S/PDIF inputs, but as far as I can see nothing that improves audio quality.
I do look forward to see the flanking circuits like I2S switch and what else they may be up to!
Cheers,
Nic

Maybe there is a new revision of the chip like with working custom filters...

Would an AC2 or Arduino control solution not be able to solve this or are you talking about a new revision of the ESS chip?

I don't know if there is a bug or not in the custom filters registers but I've programmed every single register with no problem except the custom filter. There are also limitations of the type of filters you can program with the current limit on coefficients. I think the real advantage of a BIII is multichannel with some capability for crossover.

Actually there are several advantages. Probably the biggest is the improved layout and complete flexibility regarding both inputs and outputs.

As for custom filters, there is no problem with the chip in this regard. It works perfectly for me with both Buf II and Buf III.

Hi Russ, that (advantage) goes without saying.

Consider the current crop of digital crossovers: they are geared for analog input which means at best that you must use the BII/III at full volume. Of you could tap the I2S outputs (of the digital crossovers) but they do a sample conversion to 48K or 96K which means double sample conversion. The best of course is to leverage the filters in the Sabre Chip, take native SR input and use the digital volume control.

Regarding the custom filters, any tips?

Extremely short length between regulator's pins between IC/XO is really cool, although I'm not sure that make noticeable sonic improvents.

By the way, Any ideas why their ES9018 chip had been destroyed?

The code on the datasheet works just fine for me. Other than that just use matlab or octave to generate the filter coefficients.

Those who in Japan and want an ES9018 chip for a repair use on your Buffalo board, please contact to my following address,
bunpei<at>ta2<dot>so-net<dot>ne<dot>jp

I just replaced ES9018 chip on my Buffalo II board by myself.
