I should add that cap coupled balanced output is completely silent now. Frustrating that caps are needed, but my amp just doesn't want to play ball with them not in. Using 10uf mkp4s at the moment. Will report back on SE output through headphones once the socket arrives.

Go dual-mono and you wont need the caps anymore :-)

Your buzzing sound is commonly associated with a ground loop, although it could be something else as well. Have you tried direct headphones to make sure the buzz sound is not coming from the amplifier or cabling issue? Also, please make sure there's no transfo near the DAC/Legato or cables since EMI can be picked up. Thanks --- Ooops, somebody beat me to it, caps are the answer then! DUAL MONO, DUAL MONO, I REPEAT DUAL MONO ---- :d/ I'm running dual mono and I must admit it is a big step up! Edited by user Thursday, June 9, 2011 7:16:19 AM(UTC)

Thanks. Waiting on a phones socket to test HP out directly.
Any links to wiring diag for the dual mono config? Would that be dual legato with single buffalo? (you've got me considering it now...)
There's no buzz with ivy, se or balanced. It doesn't sound like the kind of hum I would associate with a ground loop, it's more of a fizzing, static noise.

Ah, now, I've tried legato running SE into a SE amp and it's very quiet. So, my homebrew SE to Bal interconnect would appear to be the issue.

Ok, it was the cable. Noise now gone. Funny how ivy never really showed it up, although with my ear close to tweeter I could actually hear the same buzz, just really quiet. Never noticed it.
Thanks for all the input and sorry if I wasted anyones time.
ta, James

Mostly sodding my time, with all the damn desoldering and swapping ivy and legato back and forth. Hopefully I can leave her in place now and get on with doing some listening! I'm determined to prefer legato if only to justify all the faff :-)
