Hi,

Just wanted to know if I use my own balanced preamp would I need the buffered version or if the buffered version should only be used with a volumite and connected directly to a power amp?

If using a preamp would the buffer be too intrusive?

Thanks

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the answer but it left me a little confused... What I did get though is that you recommend buying the buffered version anyway unless there's a specific reason not to use it.

Do you have any good example of a not needed scenario?

Thanks
Do

Well if you only ever planned on using it balanced output without going dual mono. :)

Understood!

I guess I'll buy to buffered Legato 3.1!

Thanks

So if you go dual mono one doesn't need the buffer?

Forgive my naive question but as I'm going dual-mono with standard (unbalanced) outputs, I therefore don't need the buffered version?

Im equally confused. I have the buffered version on order, but all Russ' posting seems to say is that the output signal from the BAL/SE goes straight to the socket outputs if there's no buffer.

I think that part is fairly obvious -> no buffer = signal goes straight to output. It doesn't help us determine if the buffer is needed or not.

Russ, could there be a dedicated thread for the buffered - vs - unbuffered use of the Legato 3 on DIY audio? I am guessing HF output has something to do with the need to use the buffered version? An amp with a low bandwidth may struggle (or even enter oscillation and ultimately fry) if HF DAC oversampling artefacts are passed through... is this what the buffers are about? Or does the above poster's question have more to do with it?

The buffer is on the SE outputs when it is used as a normal stereo setup, the balanced outputs are not buffered because their output impedance is already pretty low. So what I was saying is that if you only ever use the balanced outputs and not the SE outputs then you won't care if you have the buffers or not.

If you use two Legato 3.1 in a dual mono setup the SE outputs are actually used differentially (balanced) so if you go that route and use th buffers then you will have buffered balanced outputs.

To reiterate, my advice is to get the buffers. There is never a scenario in which they will hurt anything. The only reason we offered a version without buffers was as a lower cost solution for people who may already have some other line stage or headphone amp downstage.

Hi Russ,

Sorry for a newbie question, it's just to clarify. I'm going to use Legato 3's in dual mono with SE outputs going into Ventus boards. Will I need buffers in such config?

Thanks,
Fedor
