I've re-read the integration guide and there are quite a few references to things relating to the port expander (for example the address jumper - R7 - which is in place on the slave board). There is also L5 - the power connection for port expander. I've also checked google and ve come across the BIIISE announcement which says it includes a simplified port expander.

I guess my above assumption must be correct but I can't find any information about what to do with it and how to connect it up.

Cheers,
Crom

I haven't made any progress on this other than done a load of reading. I've double checked that I've followed the integration guide instructions for Buffalo IIISE in dual mono but I can't find information about:

1) What is the port expander that Russ refers to?
2) Which jumper I should connect in the port expander and what it should be jumpered to?

I'm a little reticent to make the assumptions that I've made above without some confirmation that they are correct.

Thanks,
Crom

Simply follow the procedure "Preparing the Buffalo IIISE boards for dual mono operation", page 42. R7, L5 are all mentioned in the text.

Hi LeonvB,

Thanks for getting involved and thanks also for your fantastic integration guide.

It looks like I have been over complicating things and I can confirm that R7 has been jumpered on the slave (R) board and not jumpered on the master (L) board. I can also confirm that the address header (ADDR) is jumpered on the slave (R) and unjumpered (L) on the master.

Just to confirm, these are the steps that I have taken so far:

1) Left board: checked ADDR not jumpered, L5 is mounted and R7 is not jumpered - as default
2) Left board: checked firmware chip is mounted - it is by default
3) Left board: Dip switches set SW2 / 3 set to off (all others in the ON position)
4) Right board: Jumpered ADDR
5) Right board: Jumpered R7 and left L5 intact.
6) Right board: Firmware chip removed
7) Right and left board: connect I2C headers together (but not 3.3v) In the guide it says to connect SLA, SLC and GND. Mine appear to be marked GND, SDA, SCL.

In fact the only deviation that I can see that I have made from your great instructions is that on my boards, the I2C connectors are marked SDA and SCL.

Any help on where I could possibly be going wrong will be more than appreciated.

All the best,
Crom

SW2 - 3 set to off will only work when you are feeding it left justified. Please set SW2 - 4 to OFF for dual mono selection. Unless your BIIISE is actually a BIII of course.
thanks 1 user thanked LeonvB for this useful post.

Leon,

THANK YOU! How stupid do I feel!! It is sounding beautiful now.

Can I suggest that the actual dipswitch numbers are added to pages 42 and 21 to stop fools like me from bothering you guys unnecessarily.

I have bought some raffle tickets in support of your worth charitable efforts.

Thanks again,
Crom

Don't feel stupid, not asking for help and scrapping the project would have been stupid. Asking questions is always the smart way to solve this kind of problems.

The actual numbers are not there for a reason: first of all it's possible another firmware will alter the switch lay-out. The settings required however will remain the same.
Second: it's possible using a microcontroller to write your own firmware. In that case you still need to know how to set the ESS9018 registers, but at least what you have to set is defined.

I am still having fun and enjoying listening to my 2 BIIIse's and I'm starting to think about putting everything in a case. Continuing my dual mono saga, in a dual mono setup does it matter which DAC board I use for L and which for R. Leon's integration guide appears to be quite specific and of course I can defer to that but will it matter if swap them so that the Right channel is played through the Master dac board and the Left channel through the slave?

My logic would suggest that as each board is only dealing with one channel it should be fine...but I thought I'd better check ;-)

That one is already described: "Note: If mounting the pot to the right DAC board is much easier, swap the steps 2 to 4 between the right and left DAC board."
So it's no problem to make the other side the one with the firmware chip.

Hi Leon, thanks for getting back to me. I think the question is even simpler than that in that I don't mind which board the firmware chip is mounted on (L or R). Currently I have followed your plan in that the L board has the firmware chip. However, now I want to use that board as the R channel. Do I need to go through steps 2-4 and move the firmware chip etc or can I just swap the output connections. In other words, do dual mono boards 'know' that the one with the firmware chip on is the L channel or is the channel arbitrary to the DAC board?

I see. If that is the question: left and right is a matter of setting the address jumper (or removing it). So you need to move the jumper ADDR from one board to the other.
